It started as an exclusive, invite-only app, but like all social media platforms, it was only a matter of time before Clubhouse was unleashed on the rest of the world. Now open to all users, Clubhouse is the social app du jour. But what exactly is Clubhouse and why should you be on it?

An audio that lets you listen in

Clubhouse describes itself as the place to ‘bounce around the hallways of the Internet and meet incredible people’. Created by ex-Google employee Rohan Seth and tech entrepreneur Paul Davison, it was first launched in March 2020, but has been relatively low-key until now. Clubhouse is an audio-only app, that is reminiscent of podcasts, but is live, with the ability to listen in on discussions, interviews and conversations. Based around different topics, you could get the chance to hear some incredible conversations, and even get the chance to take part in them yourself.

Why should you join?

If you love podcasts, audiobooks or even listening to talk radio, this is the app for you. It’s like you’re eavesdropping on a conference call – except you’re very welcome! Even with a wider rollout, there’s still an air of exclusivity with the app. Once a conversation is over – that’s it, it’s not available to playback like a Facebook or Instagram live.

Topics can be on all kinds of interesting things, hosted by experts, academics and celebrities. Some of the famous names already using Clubhouse include Elon Musk, Drake and of course, Oprah. It’s worth a download, just to see what it’s all about.
